- Email marketing is not just about buy this or that from me. It’s about building relationships and trust with your readers and subscribers.
A key way to do this is by offering valuable information and service. Another important part of cultivating relationships is to be yourself when you
are writing emails. Write in the same way that you would write to a good friend. Use humor and tell stories, these are great ways to connect with
your readers.
- Do not send spam! Due to the sheer volume of emails being sent, people are even more sensitive to spam. Always offer your readers a way to
unsubscribe from your email list. If you are using an email service such as Aweber or Constant Contact, instructions on unsubscribing are
automatically included in every email. If you are not using one of these services, add instructions at the bottom of your emails.
- The subject line is a very important factor in determining whether or not your email will be opened.
To help with writing compelling subject lines, think about the subject lines in the emails you get. Which ones appeal to you? Which ones motivate
you to open the email?
Another way to get ideas is to look at magazines the next time you’re waiting in the checkout line at the grocery store. Look for the ones
that appeal to you and see how you can adapt those for your emails.
Keep the subject line short, around 40 to 60 characters total. Also, put the most important words first.
- Avoid spam words in your subject line. Most people have spam filters set in their email system. Certain words will trigger those filters so
that the email is automatically sent to a spam/junk email folder. This means your email most likely will never even be opened.
Search for “list of spam words” to see the current words most likely to trigger spam filters.
- Of course, email marketing is used to communicate about products and services that you offer. When you are sending an email for that purpose,
be sure to include one clearly stated call to action. A call to action is the specific action you want the reader to take. For emails that inform
about products and services, the call to action will most likely be a link that you want people to click. Make this link prominent and easily seen,
you can do that with bolding and a larger font size. Put the link in more than one place in the email. You can always add a PS line and repeat the
link there.
